İzmir Industrial Symbiosis Management Model Workshop Realized

İzmir Industrial Symbiosis Management Model Workshop was held on the 8th April 2022, at İzmir Mövenpick Hotel, in order to determine the most appropriate management model for Izmir using a participatory approach and to receive the opinions and suggestions of regional stakeholders within the scope of the Industrial Symbiosis in Izmir Region Project.

İzmir Industrial Symbiosis Management Model Workshop drew 34 participants, 17 men and 17 women. Representatives from İzmir’s public institutions, universities, private sector, free zones and OIZs attended the workshop.

Sena Gürsoy, Head of İZKA Green Growth Policy Unit, gave the opening speech at the İzmir Industrial Symbiosis Management Model Workshop. Gürsoy emphasized in his speech that the project was institutionalized in response to the events held in İzmir in February 2020 and the demands received from the field, and that a step was taken in collaboration with UNDP Türkiye, and included information on the activities carried out so far within the scope of the project.

Following Sena Gürsoy’s speech, the program continued with a speech by Nuri Özbağdatlı, UNDP Türkiye Climate Change and Environment Portfolio Manager. In his speech, Özbağdatlı emphasized that the Industrial Symbiosis in İzmir Region Project is UNDP Türkiye’s first direct collaboration with regional agencies, and that it is of particular importance both in the region and nationally in terms of UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Following the completion of the opening speeches, Project Manager Dr. Ahmet Türküm delivered a presentation. Dr. Türküm stated that the goal of the workshop was to create a multi-stakeholder and facilitative regional management structure that will allow industrial symbiotic cooperations to function institutionally and systematically for many years, managing the administrative, technical and financial infrastructure. Following the presentation, the first session of the İzmir Industrial Symbiosis Management Model Workshop began, moderated by Meral Mungan Arda, UNDP Türkiye Chemicals and Waste Projects Coordinator, and Bilgen Eymirli, İZKA Green Growth Policy Unit Expert.

The first session, in which management model proposals were developed, focused on determining the functional structures of “Program Management”, “Field Applications”, “Software”, “R&D” as well as “Technical Support” and “Stakeholder Governance”. In the second session, presentations of the structures determined in the first session were presented. Four different teams were formed during the session, which continued in the round table format. Throughout the activity, representatives from the project management unit and İZKA visited the team desks, exchanged ideas about the work, and ensured that all teams participated interactively in the workshop.
